Chartreux Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Chartreux is known as the cat of France. While they are quiet, the are very expressive like a mime. This is an old breed tracing it roots back as far as the 16th century.

Chartreux Appearance: 

Chartreux cats are medium sized cats weighing 7-16 pounds (3.6-4.5 kg). These blue (gray) cats have a plush, medium length, double coat Their eyes range from copper to gold, they are strong cats with a chunky body, and a broad face with upturned eyes that make them look like they are smiling perpetually. 

Chartreux cats mature slowly with males taking up to 5 years to fully mature. They have a broad chest and shoulders with short, fine boned legs. 

It is said that these cats were prized for their fur and hunted to make coats and other items.

Chartreux cats have a lifespan of 11-15 years.


Chartreux Temperament: 

Chartreux are exceptionally quiet with some of them even being mute. They are playful cats their whole lives and exceptionally agile with lightning quick reflexes. Historically, they were valued for their rodent catching abilities. 

These cats may be quiet, but they are intelligent and have been known to figure out door latches and radio buttons. They are said to have fun, playful personalities and even have a sense of humor. 

Chartreux cats attach quickly to their owners. They want to be in your lap and will follow you around the house.
