British Shorthair Cat: Facts & Trivia

The British Shorthair is a large, strong, reserved, calm cat much like the British themselves. This is an ancient breed that can trace it roots back to the times when the Romans invaded the British Isles.

British Shorthair Appearance: 

The British Shorthair is a large, round cat, weighing 8-20 pounds (3.6-9.1 kg), with a round head, round paws, round eyes and a tail with a rounded tip. They have large chests and short legs. 

The fur is short and plush, without any undercoat. The main color is blue, which is why this cat is also sometimes known as the “British Blue.” However, these cats also come in many different colors and patterns, including white,black, golden, silver and others. 

British Shorthair have a lifespan of 14-20 years.

British Shorthair Temperament: 

These cats are medium active cats that prefer to sit next to their owners than in their lap. They also do not like to be carried. The British Shorthair is usually quiet, undemanding and has a soft voice. 

These cats are playful as kittens, but begin to mellow at about a year of age. British Shorthairs take 3-5 year to mature. Mature British Shorthair cats have even been called couch potatoes. 

These cats are calm in gentle around children, guests, and other pets.

Other: The British Shorthair was the inspiration for the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland.

These cats are one of the oldest breeds going back to the first century AD. It is thought that the Romans brought Egyptian cats with them that interbreed with the local European wild cats to form the British Shorthair.
