Bombay Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Bombay is the result of a cross of a sable Burmese and black American Shorthair. This cat looks like a black panther, is medium sized with a muscular body.

Bombay Appearance: 

Bombay cats are medium sized cats weighing 8-15 pounds (3.6-6.8 kg). They are shorthairs with silky, close lying all black coats. Even their paws pads, nose and lips are black. Bombay’s have green eyes, rounded heads and ears. 

In short they looking like miniature black panthers. This was the goal of their American breeder, Nikki Horner. They are named “Bombay” because she was trying to get a cat that resembled the black leopard of India. 

This cat is also known as the black Burmese and given the nicknames “patent-leather kid with new-penny eyes” and the “velcro cat.”

Bombay cats have a lifespan of 15-20 years.

Bombay Temperament: 

The Bombay is a medium active cat and definitely a lap cat. This cat will follow their owners around when they are not napping, which is how they got the nickname “velcro cat.”

They are loving cats, that play fetch and some are willing to take walks on a leash. They are easy to train to do tricks. They are amiable cats that get along with other cats, kids, and dogs.
