Scottish Fold Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Scottish Fold cat is known for their folded ears that bend forward. These cats are the result of a natural dominant genetic mutation.

Scottish Fold Appearance: 

Scottish Fold cats are medium sized weighing 6-13 pounds (2.7-5.9 kg). Their folded ears give them an owl like appearance. 

Scottish Fold cats come in short and long haired versions, with the long haired versions known as a Highland Fold. Their fur is soft and plush. They come in a variety of colors and patterns and eye color depends on coat color. 

Kittens are born with straight ears that start to fold within 3 weeks. Not all kittens will have folded ears. 

Scottish Fold cat shave a lifespan of 11-14 years.

Scottish Fold Temperament: 

Scottish Fold cats are very loving and become strongly attached to their family. These cats are moderately active, will greet you at the door, follow you around the house and jump in your lap when you sit down.

They are known for laying and sleeping on their backs, as well as for standing on their hind legs like a marmot. 

Other: These cats are prone to a number of health issues, including many that are related to the gene that causes them to have folded ears. It is considered unethical to breed two Scottish Fold cats together because of the skeletal problems the offspring are likely to have. 

This breed is recognized by North American organizations.
